Y-STR test; i.e. Y-chromosome test, is a test to understand if there is biological relationship from father side. This test providing to examine father-son relationship can also be performed between uncle-nephew, grandfather-grandchild or cousins (sons of uncles) when father does not want or is not available to participate in test for some reason. Because there is no Y chromosome in women, Y-STR test can be applied only for men.
Chromosomes differ according to genders. Women have XX whereas men have XY chromosomes. Y chromosomes that are found only in men do not almost undergo change during inheritance. The fact that Y chromosome does not undergo change provides to test whether there is biological relationship from father side.
99.9% of DNA shows similarity between individuals. To understand if there is any biological relationship between individuals with DNA test, STR markers which are located on dissimilar locations of DNA are used. In Y-STR test, STR markers which are located only in Y chromosome are tested and DNA profiles are obtained. By comparing DNA profiles of test participants obtained from their mouth swab samples, the result of whether test participants are from same father side is obtained.
Other usage area of Y-STR test is tracing origin. We can have an idea about our ancestors with Y-STR test even if many years have passed thanks to Y chromosome that does not undergo any change in time. In addition to close relationships like father-son, uncle-nephew or grandfather-grandchild, this test is preferred by individuals who wonder from which ancestor they are coming, individuals who want to learn where their ancestors migrated from or two men who wonder if there is any biological relationship in their family tree.
Reliability, privacy and speediness are three principles of DNA Hospital. In order to provide to submit results only to participants, not anyone else, a reference number consisting of numbers and letters is given to test participants. Test results are submitted 5 workdays after taking permissions of official parents of under 18 years-old children and test participants and receiving mouth swab sample. DNA Hospital is always with you!
